….For the past 4 years Hair By Juliet has been an amazing venture! What started as an “idea” blossomed into a full blown and insanely busy business! I have to say I am blessed and completely amazed at how it took off in such a short time and I am so incredibly thankful for all the brides I’ve been able to meet, get to know and work with! I have made so many great friends in the process, and for that I am also so grateful. I am also forever indebted to the planners, friends and past brides who have referred me and supported me! As some of you know, I have been trying to balance my life and juggle so many things including 2 businesses. Juliet Elizabeth Photography has taken off and it has put me at a “crossroads.” I have chosen to take a hiatus from Hair by Juliet and focus solely on photography beginning July 2009. I have many contracts and appointments that I will fulfill over the next 11 months, but will not be accepting any new appointments or bookings for wedding hair.

I am extremely excited about this decision and look forward to a new year of exciting possibilities!

Thanks so much to you ALL for your love, support, encouragement and friendship!!

In the summertime it can be hard to keep hair healthy if you are swimming in a pool, going to the beach, and if you color or highlight your hair, sun can dry it out.
My secret weapon I've used forever is Sebastian Potion 9. I have never found any other leave-in conditioner that works better! (and trust me, I have tried many).
Use in hair after you towel dry and get most of the moisture out. Use about a dime size (rub between hands) and start at the ends, working up. I never put it directly at the roots.
Try it! It replaces deep conditioning and keeps hair shiny. :-)

Being Thankful

This is a photo of my mom and dad I took recently at folly beach on the river. I snuck up on them and took it!
One thing I've learned since my mom's illness is to notice the beauty around me. The world is full of it, not just in nature but in people. I really pay attention now.... Not that I didn't notice this before, but now it's so obvious to me.
I have watched my dad get thrown into a "role" he probably never imagined. He handles this with such patience, care and understanding. I don't think it was that easy for him at first, which is understandable. When I'm here for a week (like I am right now), I see such strength in him. I'm really proud of him.
Things like this never make sense or really matter until it happens to you. Life is different, but actually a "good" different. I pray daily my mom's brain and body will heal, but I am also very thankful for the lessons I've learned from all of this.

Products I swear by!

Before I started doing hair, I was obsessed with skin products! I went through a phase where I had breakout problems and I tried everything you can imagine. I'm the type to research and try just about everything, and that's what I did.
I'm going to share with you what finally worked for me. I realize that what I use may not be the best according to the "books." I say that because I did also go to school for esthetics (skin/facials, etc), and learned that some of what I use may go against the "rules" of skincare, but it seriously works for me.
I keep it simple! Here are 4 of my favorite products.

Tazorac Cream........great for breakouts and keeping skin smooth. Be aware, this stuff is STRONG. I never overuse it and I don't use it every day! It will make you peel like crazy if you overuse it (you also must stay out of the sun!). It's only by prescription, and must be used sparingly, at least 20 minutes after you wash your face to make sure there is absolutely no moisture left.
Dove soap.....I know that most books say never use soap. It strips your skin of it's protective layer. Well, dove is great for me. I use the sensitive skin version.
Bobbi Brown blush.....I LOVE it, can't live without it. I am NOT a makeup girl but don't leave home without it. I can buy one and it lasts me over a year. Well worth the money.
Topix ultra lite moisture dew cream.....I have combination skin and have to be careful of heavy cream. this stuff is great. Very light and you have no idea it's on! Unfortunately there is no sunscreen in it. Sunscreen breaks me out, so I just have to watch being in the sun. You can find this online.

Okay, so I never do this! Today I had a very rare day off.....I decided to head out and get a manicure (on my sad little nails) and a pampering pedicure.
I made my way over to "Prince's Nails" behind the Tanger outlets in N. Charleston. My friend Leslie recommended, and I listen to her because she is always so put together and stylie. (My own lingo....sorry).
Anyway, I was impressed! I haven't had that many mani/pedi's in my life, but the ones I have had were just so-so. The girl that did them for me was Katie, and I have never seen anyone take so much time on cuticles. Seriously. I was so relaxed when I left!
For you girls who are getting married and want a place for you and your maids to go? This place is perfect...it's so big! They have alot of room for a big group. It's nice, clean and fancy compared to your run-of-the-mill nail place.

Ever have a day where you feel out of place? I think everyone does! From the time I was a little girl, I always felt "different," not like alot of other kids. Part of that was me being super intuitive, artsy, a deep thinker. I'd often times hide this by being super silly and make people laugh! The truth is, inside I felt like no one really "knew" me. I'd only let them see that silly side, the side that seemed to be the most comfortable or appealing.
As an adult, I still feel this way sometimes. A little dorky, sometimes not "fitting in." I have to stop and think "who" really fits in and what does that mean? Following the crowd and do we think others want us to be? Dressing a certain way, watching popular shows on tv, having the same hobbies?
If you are reading this and have ever felt like that, I know you know what I'm talking about!
Getting into the "wedding industry" wasn't easy for me. I honestly didn't know what I was up against until about a year into the biz. I realized quickly that this wasn't your typical stylist job, the energy surrounding it was a bit uncomfortable for me at first. Kind of like when I first moved to Folly and realized that Folly Beach does not equal Downtown. haha! ("I'm supposed to wear high heals while shopping???? What's wrong with flip flops?!).
Then one day it occurred to me, a little moment in time where I stopped, took a look at the big picture and just got it. I realized I needed to accept in myself what I'm always saying about the world. I've always had this motto,"how boring the world would be if we all looked and acted the same."
My job isn't to impress people or wear the "right" clothes. My job is so personal, to make a difference and help a girl and her friends have a ton of fun on the wedding day! To talk, to listen to share those moments and help them feel beautiful.
Do I still have days where I feel like a complete dork? Of COURSE! BUT, I will never ever compromise who I am....I will always give the best of who I am and try every day to be thankful for the way God made me.
Be thankful for the way God made YOU....Always be your true authentic self. The world will love you for it.

I met Meg last year in July and was really looking forward to her day at the Rivercourse! She was so much fun and has a smile that lights up the room. Leslie did an awesome job on everyone's makeup, Cris Bernstein was on top of things (like she always is!), and Heather Barrie did all the tent decorations. What a great group--I had so much fun with them and got creative with alot of different styles!

Alice Gets Married!

Alice and her family...... One of the kindest and amazing groups I've ever met. They have really been dealing with some hard things, but still have such a great outlook on life and their love for each other is obvious!
Alice was married last friday on a pier behind the Charleston Harbor Resort Hotel. Rory from Jubilation was her coordinator (always alot of fun to work with!) and Karen from OK florist did an amazing job on the flowers! I got to meet one of her photographers from Olive Productions--so sweet!
The flowers in the girl's hair were from whole foods. I ran by there originally looking for daisies but I thought these were so pretty and feminine. They were called "lisianthus."

My second wedding yesterday was on seabrook island. Cindy was the bride! My friend Kelly did an awesome job making all the girls look gorgeous and the fabulous Melanie Murphy with By Invitation Only was Cindy's coordinator. I was a happy camper doing hair right next to the ocean! I could see it out the window in the room where we were. It was SOOOOO beautiful!

Yesterday I had 2 weddings. The first was out at Middleton Place, and the bride was Amanda. Her Photographer was Rod from Red Shutter studios. Rod is SO hilarious and a seriously talented photoguy. Between him and Amanda I was so wound up when I left I felt like a kid that ate way too much candy at halloween! HaHa!

So I've had tons going on lately and have SO MUCH to blog about!! I have no idea where to begin.
I will start with my hair change......
I was getting very mad at my hair yesterday. You know, one of those annoying BAD hair days that you have sometimes? I have been 'trying' to grow my bangs out and they were getting so long. I go through this I think at least once a year and then I just get to a point where I can't stand it! SO...... I CUT THEM I think 4 inches!! Back to the starting point! haha. I kind of like them. It reminded me of Erin Fetherston. I actually didn't think of this until I was done. I thought," this reminds me of that designer chick." So girls, here's one way of an instant change with your 'do. ;-)

Remember when you are planning for a wedding outside, you DO have to consider weather. It may be very windy (near the ocean or river), humid & hot, especially here in Charleston! Depending on the time of year it's much worse in certain months...Don't fret, just be aware and prepared!
The best styles for outside are either updos that are very secure, OR styles that can be blown and still look good if a piece falls here and there.

Ionic "anti frizz" Hairdryer! 2 thumbs up!!

My (not-so) old hair dryer blew up a few weeks ago and I was forced to get out and buy a new one. I decided to try something new. While I have been very sceptical of these "anti-frizz" dryers, I thought, "what the heck! It wouldn't hurt to try one"....
I took a trip to sally beauty supply. While this store isn't typically my favorite for products, I have had really great results with their curling irons. I went in and found this hairdryer by "ion." I have to say it WORKS. I've got naturally wavy hair that I straighten every day with a brush as I dry it. I noticed a difference the first day I used it! It's lightweight and not nearly as loud as my old dryer. It costs about 2x the amount of the one I had before from target, but that one only lasted about 6 months! I even like it better than my "pro" one.

Who says you can't wear short hair for your wedding day?! Stacy says you CAN, and she wears it well.
She told me she normally has a "pixie" cut and this was long for her. She grew it out to have something "to work with."
Of course I tend to lean toward full blown fingerwaves for this length of hair, but I don't think that is quite her style. Here is an idea we tried the other day at her trial run. In the end (but I have no picture of this) I flipped the back out a little. That was cute too! I tried out a clip I had from Claire's boutique, but I think we may go for some shoe clips!

Sarah Gets married!

Sarah was married yesterday at the Legare Waring House @ Charlestown Landing. The ceremony was held outdoors (the rain held off--whew!) under the "avenue of oaks." Melissa and Leigh from a Charleston Bride (seriously awesome girls) coordinated and Marni Rothschild (who totally rocks) was the photographer.
Sarah wanted her hair to be textured but still keep a "classic low chignon" look to it. Her hair accessories were hand made and were beautiful!! I think the style went well with her gown and the setting of the ceremony. Leslie gave her a "glowing bride" look with super cool lashes!

I drove up to NC today to see my parents and help out with my mom. If you've followed the story of my mom's illness, the last big thing that happened is her full brain radiation last october. It has affected her so much that she sometimes doesn't know me. She has had "dementia" like sypmtoms.... It's been heartbreaking and painful, but I have tried not to give up hope!
Today she looked more like herself than she has in months! Her hair is growing back! I clapped with excitement when I saw it and raved about how short and sassy her hair was.
Sometimes when I'm here I try to ask mom questions or do things she might remember. I always notice she remembers old songs or things from the past.....

Growing up we always had music in our house. We had a piano and my mom would sometimes spontaneously sit down and play. There are a few songs that really stand out in my mind and I can still "hear" them.....One in particular she would play so passionately I could tell it really affected her. I know so, because it affected me as a little girl......I would really pay attention and listen.
Sometimes she'd sing but other times she'd just play the notes.
I decided to see if she might remember this song, "I Believe." She said,"I can't play that Julie." I somehow got her to sit down anyway and try. Low and behold someone (I think my sister angie) had left the lyrics to this song printed out and folded up on the piano! I knew the tune so I started to sing. It was unbelievable how my mom started to play it as she listened to me sing! It was only one finger at a time hitting the notes, but she did it! I tried to hold back tears as I sang and watched my beautiful mom sit with me and do her best to play this touching song. This is beauty to me. Real life, a moment that I will never ever forget.

balancing my busy life......

Whenever I meet people and tell them what I do for a living, most immediately ask,"so you only work on weekends?" I want to laugh when I hear this and sometimes I'm not even sure where to begin explaining how crazy my life is.
Balancing 2 businesses and having time for regular chores and spending time with my hubby and family(who are scattered in different states) is super tricky. There is so much that goes into customer service....answering emails & phone calls, calling people back, scheduling trial runs or photoshoots, copying and mailing contracts, following up, going to numerous trial runs, shoots, going to the bank, editing pictures and copying them to send, updating blogs and websites, consistently looking for inspiration for new hairdo's or being more creative in my photos, and sending thankyous!
In between this I'm taking voice lessons, doing regular "chores," going up to NC to help my dad take care of my mom, hanging out with my husband and going to church.
Could I be any busier?! YES, I'm sure I could......ha!
BUT, through all of this, I wouldn't change it. I LOVE what I do, and I'm so passionate about it, whether I'm spending time with a bride and her family doing hair or shooting and capturing moments. My scheduled appointments for me are not "jobs." They feel like part of my life, my purpose and I put my heart and soul into them.
If you have worked with me or will be in the future, this is what I want you to know. You won't just be hiring me for a "job." My hope is that you know how much I love doing this and every situation and wedding is so important to me! I realize every day how truly blessed I am and never take it for granted. I am thankful for my life and for all the opportunities I've been given.
Busy? YES, but I appreciate every minute of it!!

If you've never met Katherine Mullins McDonald here in Charleston, you should! Katherine owns two boutiques here in town called "Lula Kate" and last year she launched a new line of party and bridesmaids dresses--which by the way are SO pretty!
Last thursday I had a great time doing hair for her models at a photoshoot at the rice mill building downtown. I got to see my friend Kait (the photographer for the day!), made some new friends and got to work with Erin again, who I had just met a few weeks before!

I have always been very curious and a person interested in details, so it is important to me to do my research. When my skin started breaking out, I began visiting a dermatologist. I started using retin-a, and it worked well, but was super harsh on my skin. My cousin told me about tazorac, and I thought I'd give it a try! According to some, tazorac is the strongest cream available, but it seemed to work well for me.

When I moved to Charleston, I began to visit a well-known dermatologist near my home. She continued to prescribe tazorac until one day at an appointment told me about a cream that was even "better," called avage. Around this time I was in school for esthetics, learning about marketing and development of products. I had also been told by my mom, how pharmaceutical companies would come out with new products to replace old ones (that maybe the patent had expired on). What I realized quickly was avage was being marketed for cosmetic purposes vs. acne problems.
And guess what? The price was an exuberant $140 vs. about $30 for tazorac. AND insurance wouldn't cover it.

This bothered me, especially after researching information when I realized both creams were essentially the same thing! When I'd ask the nurses or dr. herself what the difference was, they would never give me a straight answer! The pharmacist told me point blank, " they are the same thing."

The moral of this story.....do your research, don't believe everything people tell you. It's very sad that things like this happen. I have also learned to work with people who are honest and CARE about their jobs. It reminds me daily that honesty, moral standards and character will always prevail. Success isn't the huge office building, but the people you've affected in a loving positive way. :-)

Julie was married out at the Patriot's Point "links" golfcourse today. Unfortunately it poured down rain right before! But...that didn't stop her from looking like a fabulous and glowing bride-to-be.
The theme for her hair and dress was classic and elegant, like Grace Kelly! I happen to LOVE Grace Kelly, and had a book about her, so I brought it for Julie to have a reference and ideas for her hair.

Jodi, who owns "White" on Daniel Island, called recently to ask me if I'd help out with her one year anniversary party for the shop. Of course I said "YES!" I love Jodi--I bought my own wedding dress from her a few years ago (at her other shop "Bridals By Jodi") and did her hair for her wedding.
I did the model's hair and had a blast with them and the makeup artists (I will get their info soon!)" backstage." I hated I had to leave before the "runway" show, but I had so much fun getting shots of the girls getting ready.

Most people who know me well realize I hate to "style" my hair. ha! Maybe it's because I spend alot of time doing other's hair.....or maybe it's because I just like a simple style. If you meet me I will probably have my hair in one of 2 ways.....a ponytail or down straight...maybe a headband for some color. I love to wear it this way because I feel like "me."

When you are choosing a style for your wedding day, pick something that makes YOU feel pretty. It doesn't matter what your best friend or your cousin "so-and-so" thinks. Opinions are fine, but it really boils down to what makes you feel like a bride, and beautiful!!
During a trial run I usually always ask girls, "how does it make you feel?" Obviously it helps to have the dress close by to try on and get the big picture! If you don't have it yet, try putting on a top with a similar neckline and color that your gown has, the jewelry you think you might wear, and makeup that you plan to wear. The "look" will come together and you will just "know" if it's the right one for you. :-)

Yesterday I had the privilege of working with a sweet couple, Ann and Bill. I did Ann's hair and shot the ceremony afterwards. Here are a few of her right before the ceremony. She looked amazing and was just glowing--Leslie did a great job on her makeup (as usual!!). As we walked out of the b&b where Ann was staying, a group of people saw her and thought she was a model in a fashion show!

Here is Jenn who is getting married in June! Leslie and I met with her and her mom today for a practice run. We had alot of fun and she just looked stunning! I really loved her headpiece and veil she got from the Gown Boutique of Charleston. Her veil had a monogram on it-I don't think I've ever seen one like that! so cool.

Leslie and I met with a bride today named Kate. She resembles Minnie Driver a little! We had so much fun. I shot some pictures as she had her makeup done, seeing it for the first time, and after we took her fancy 'do down. (I didn't want her to walk around charleston with wedding hair in her t-shirt--ha!).

Choosing hair accessories can feel so daunting sometimes! There are so many options.....
The best thing to do is think about what type of wedding you are having.....
in this instance, Amy is having a very formal event. Her wedding is at 6pm and her gown very formal and embellished. An updo is a perfect option for an occasion like this and since her gown is very decorated, it made sense to add "sparkle" to her hair!
I tried 2 different options....a pretty and simple bow clip, and a headband. Either would have worked, but Amy liked the headband best. Whatever makes you feel prettiest is definitely what you should go for! I thought it totally suited her. She looked gorgeous!

Beach Wedding Hair....

Jennifer is getting married on folly beach this August. I met her and her fiance today--they were so sweet and laid-back! I'm super stoked too because they've hired me to shoot their rehearsal/dinner, and to shoot at their wedding. I'm really looking forward to it!
Jennifer wanted her hair to be very beachy. I found a pretty pink and white silk flower to go in her hair--it looked so pretty in her beautiful red hair! Since it's going to be HOT, we may end up doing 2 'dos. Good to have options for a charleston wedding in august...Either way she'll be a stunning beachbride!

Hair Extensions!!

Jessica is a bride that's getting married in May. Today she drove down to Charleston to have her bridal portraits taken by MCG photography --Corrie and James are great!
Since she had cut her right before she got engaged(see her "before" photo that she sent me), Jessica decided she wanted extensions for a super glamorous, sexy look. We ended up using 2 different colors (of human hair extensions) and it seriously looked AMAZING!

Formal with a little "detail"

This style was done for a "black-tie" formal event. Leslie wore a "little black dress" with alot of pleating through the front.... I didn't want her hair to "compete," so I decided to keep the back straight. The back had just enough "detail" to make it interesting, and the brooch added a little sparkle, without it being overdone.

I had a great time with Sharon (and her mom) today during her trial run! She is getting married in May out at the rivercourse on kiawah island. She's a naturally pretty girl who's going for the more romantic style--her dress is super "flowy" and beachy, so a soft, unstructured 'do is the perfect style for the look she is going for. I love it!

I'm sure some of you visitors to this blog are wondering why a "beauty and style" blog would have so many entries about life and people......
I hold the belief that "beauty" doesn't always have to be the obvious, or what we see when we LOOK at someone and judge their appearance..I think beauty is so much more than that!!
We've all heard these conversations about "how so-and-so would be so much prettier if she was nicer," or "that guy is so good looking but when he opens his mouth...."
Be more than a beautiful face. Do something kind for someone around you today!! It doesn't have to be big. You can open the door for someone pushing a stroller, or smile at a stranger that looks like they need a pick-me-up! Make someone's day by making a difference.
THEN, notice how you feel when you look in the mirror. I gaurantee you'll be glowing.

Saturday Wedding

I had a great time at the wedding I did on Saturday! Ashley and her friends/family were so much fun. Luckily I had 2 seconds to shoot a quick photo of all the gorgeous bridesmaids and their 'dos before they had to leave. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to get one of the bride. Alot of brides use this scripture (1 Corinthians 13:4-8) in their ceremony. I have always loved it, and I'm sure alot of you all do too......but have you ever really thought about the words? It's such a great lesson for us all, not just to be read at a wedding, but in everyday life and how we treat each other. Read this and really let the words sink in...Try to think about it today. :-)

What makes a person "beautiful?"

I have always thought my mom was beautiful. When I'd look back at her photos when she was in high school and when I was a baby, I always thought she looked like a "movie star." Of course, (you may be thinking), she is MY mom, so I naturally feel that way.
But it was something more. Not just her outer beauty, but something she "exudes."
She is tough, but in such a feminine way. She is really funny, but she never exceeds the point of making a fool out of herself in public...She knows there is a "time and a place." Mom is loving and so open to people of all backgrounds....I am so thankful she passed this along to me! I think this is one reason she is so approachable. Random strangers will talk to her like they've known her forever.

So why all of this about my mom??
Some of you may know she has been battling cancer for a few years now. It has gone from her breast, to her liver, to her brain. Mom received full-brain radiation a few months ago.
She not only lost all her hair, but alot of her memory as well. She can get confused and sometimes frustrated because she knows she is confused. (Especially because she LOVES learning and is quite an "intellectual.")
BUT through all of this, her personality still comes through....she is funny, warm, and a joy to be around.

Because I am in the beauty industry, I'm surrounded by what the world considers "beautiful."
What I strive to do is to step back from this view, and everyday see people for WHO they are, get to know them on the inside--including myself. Find beauty coming from their soul, their smile and laugh. This has so much more meaning to me.
Not be self critical but always remember why I'm here, trying to make a difference and thank God for it.

Those of you who've already worked with me may remember me talking about this product. (If I haven't done your hair yet, you will probably hear about it!).
I LOVE it so much and really haven't found anything better. It's amazing stuff.
It's called "catfight," and is a little jar of pomade. Don't let the "sticky" consistency scare you.....In hair it seems to disappear. It tames "flyaways" in the winter, and smooths "frizzies" in the humidity. It is my best friend for coarse hair that is hard to blow-dry smooth (it can be used on ANY hair texture though!). To use, put a little dab in your hands and "rake" through dry/towel-dried hair. If you need more, add it later. It's also great when flat-ironing and drying hair with a metal brush.
Look for it online or ask your stylist about it.

Annie was married on Dec. 29th on Kiawah Island. She wanted a pretty, classic updo. The inspiration was behind Natalie Portman's classic red carpet style, and I just added my own "twist" to it. I thought she looked beautiful!
